Kevin Costner’s grand Western adventure, Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1, has officially wrapped up its theatrical run, and the numbers are in.
The project, which Kevin Costner not only stars in but also directs, is just the beginning of a four-part cinematic journey.
Released on June 28, the first film of the Horizon saga saw Costner pour a whopping $38 million of his own money into its creation. Unfortunately, the film’s box office debut was a bit of a letdown. The movie landed in third place during its first week in theaters, with a total of $11 million across 3,334 theaters.
Despite the excitement surrounding its release, it couldn’t quite capture the audience’s attention. The two movies that placed ahead of Horizon were A Quiet Place: Day One and Inside Out 2. After debuting in theaters, Horizon then made a swift transition to digital streaming, allowing fans to rent or purchase it on platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV+. This move helped spark some renewed interest in fans.
As for the financials, the film’s production costs were reported to be around $100 million. Other sources suggested that the total expenses, including marketing, were even higher.
Last week, Horizon concluded its box office journey.
With a final domestic gross of just over $29 million and an additional $2.4 million from international sales, Forbes reports that Horizon made a global tally of $31.4 million.
Film enthusiasts know that opening results aren’t the only measure of success, and Costner agrees.
“I’ve lived with movies and what happens to them on their opening weekend,” the former Yellowstone star said. “If we put so much pressure on that, we’re bound to be disappointed. I’m really happy that ‘Horizon’ looks like what it’s supposed to look like, and that’s the way it’ll look the rest of its life. And that’s really important to me in this process.”

So, what’s next for this epic saga?
The future of Horizon Chapter 2 remains uncertain. Initially set to release on August 16, the sequel was pulled from the schedule “in hopes of allowing more time to grow the audience for the first film.”
Luckily, fans have received good news since then. The film is set to debut at the Venice Film Festival on September 7. There will also be a special screening of the first chapter beforehand.
