Kevin Costner Throws His Own Money Behind New Western Movie Series

Yellowstone star Kevin Costner is currently working on a new movie series called Horizon: An American Saga. The four-part Western series has been a passion project of his for years. As he told Deadline, he first started work on Horizon in 1988, but he had trouble finding someone who wanted to make it.

I don’t know why, but I have not let go of this one,” he said.

Costner believes so strongly in the project, he decided to throw his own money behind it. He told Deadline he took out a mortgage on his Santa Barbara property to fund the project. It was a move his accountant questioned, but Costner didn’t even think twice about it:

“I’ve mortgaged 10 acres on the water in Santa Barbara where I was going to build my last house,” Costner said.“But I did it without a thought. It has thrown my accountant into a f—— conniption fit. But it’s my life, and I believe in the idea and the story.”

Costner continued:

“At the end of the day, I’m a storyteller, and I went ahead and put my own money into it. I’m not a very good businessman, so, scratch your head, if you will.”

Kevin Costner Has A History Of Funding Projects He Feels Passionate About

This isn’t Costner’s first time funding one of his projects. He previously threw his own money behind three other works, including his Academy Award-winning film Dancing with Wolves.

But Costner doesn’t intend to continue the pattern after finishing Horizon. As he told Deadline:

“…I’ll tell you what. I’m never gonna do this again,” he said with a laugh. “I’m never putting my f—— money in another movie after these four.”

It’s clear Costner is passionate about this project. In a May 17 post on Instagram he said, “I have to tell you, I haven’t felt this way about a movie since we were making Dances With Wolves. Can’t wait to share it with all of you.
