“Whiskey Lullaby” is arguably one of the most haunting country music songs ever.
Released in 2004 as the third single from Brad Paisley’s album Mud On The Tires, this heart-wrenching duet with Alison Krauss quickly gained recognition. In fact, it went on to win the 2005 Country Music Association Song of the Year Award and was certified 2× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, solidifying its place in country music history.
Bill Anderson and Jon Randall wrote “Whiskey Lullaby,” drawing inspiration from a dark period in Randall’s life. He was going through a difficult time personally, including a divorce and career setbacks. Additionally, a comment from Randall’s manager about his drinking habits inspired the emotional line, “he put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger.”
Did you know that “Whiskey Lullaby” was originally supposed to go to another artist?
The Chicks first got hold of the track before their career took a different direction. Fate then had other plans when Brad Paisley later discovered the song at his publishing house and suggested recording it as a duet.
Although he considered either Alison Krauss or Dolly Parton for the female part, Paisley ultimately chose Krauss, a decision that undoubtedly contributed to the song’s success.
