American Idol Top 7 Contestants Honor Their Moms On Mother’s Day
The competition continues to intensify on Season 23 of American Idol. Judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie have played an integral part in discovering the next rising star in music.
Tonight (May 11), the Top 7 contestants each prepared and performed two songs. First, they chose a Disney song and sought the advice of star mentor Lin-Manuel Miranda. Later, they performed heartfelt songs dedicated to their moms in honor of Mother’s Day.
Breanna Nix Covers Lauren Alaina’s “Like My Mother Does”
To celebrate Mother’s Day, Breanna Nix put her personal touch on a heartfelt song by former American Idol finalist Lauren Alaina.
Lauren Alaina, who will soon welcome her first child, released “Like My Mother Does” as her first single in 2011, after being named the runner-up for Season 10 of Idol. It debuted at number 49 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and later peaked in the 36th spot.
Breanna Nix is a mother herself, and first introduced America to her sweet family during her Idol audition. While she sang “Jesus Take The Wheel,” her son, Emerson, fell asleep in Carrie Underwood’s arms. The moment melted the hearts of viewers everywhere.
Tonight, Breanna’s husband and son watched from the audience as she passionately performed “Like My Mother Does.” The 25-year-old choked back tears as she sang the final notes of the emotional song.

The Judges React To Breanna Nix’s Performance
Carrie Underwood wiped tears from her face following Breanna’s performance and admitted that she might cry during every performance of this segment. Luke Bryan emphasized how the aspiring singer “keeps delivering on the vocals.”
Finally, Lionel Richie gave this piece of musical wisdom:
“The best note you can hit is an emotional note called the tear. Once you hit the tear, you’ve got everybody in the room.”
He adds that Breanna’s performance was “fantastic.” Ultimately, Breanna’s efforts paid off, and fans voted her into the Top 5! See who else made the cut.
