Reba McEntire Inspires Voice Semi-Finalist’s Performance

Reba McEntire served as the Mega Mentor on Season 23 of The Voice. Since then, it’s been announced that McEntire is taking Blake Shelton‘s place as the newest coach on the show.

Longtime host Kelly Clarkson is also leaving The Voice. Though unlike Shelton, she has not said if this is merely a break or a permanent departure.

McEntire clearly inspired one member of Team Kelly as she prepared for her semi-finals performance. That contestant was Holly Brand. She chose McEnire’s “Rumor Has It” as her song that week.

“Rumor Has It” was released in November 1990 as the second single off of McEntire’s album of the same title. It reached the third spot on the Hot Country Songs chart and peaked at #1 on the country chart in Canada.

By the end of 1991, “Rumor Has It” ranked at the 17th position on the year-end Country Songs chart.

How Did Holly Brand Do When She Covered “Rumor Has It” During The Semi-Finals?

Brand’s rendition of “Rumor Has It” was well-received. Clarkson jumped to her feet at one point after hearing Brand hit a powerful note in the song. She heaped compliments on Brand, telling her she is “so gifted” and that McEntire would be proud of her performance.

Brand also received praise from Horan, who said her performance was “impeccable.”

But Brand’s fate wasn’t left up to the coaches. Viewers got the chance to vote for the contestants for the first time this season during the semi-finals. After everything was tallied, Brand was revealed to be in the bottom three, so she was eliminated from the competition.

Brand certainly went out on a high note with her rendition of “Rumor Has It.” Watch her performance below.
