Max and his brother Frederico, known to friends and family as Fico, were involved in a car accident in Mexico. They were in a Porsche Boxster driving in an area about 60 miles west of Mexico City, when they collided with a Ford Explorer pickup truck.

Fico did not survive the crash, while Max was airlifted to a Mexico City hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Max’s team, AM Racing, released the following statement:

Fico, 17, was also a driver in the Mexico truck series and was a “rising star.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Gutiérrez family.
