Kyle Busch’s 11-year-old son paid touching tribute to his dad the day after Kyle died at 41.

Legendary NASCAR driver Kyle Busch died on Thursday, May 21, after a brief and severe illness. On Saturday, Busch’s family revealed that his death was caused by pneumonia that progressed into sepsis, “resulting in rapid and overwhelming medical complications.”

On Sunday, Busch’s wife, Samantha, children Brexton (11) and Lennix (4), parents Tom and Gaye Busch, and brother Kurt Busch, gathered to pay tribute to Kyle. Prior to the Coca-Cola 600 where Kyle was scheduled to race, his family stood centerfield and was surrounded by their NASCAR family as NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell honored Kyle.

This was Kyle Busch’s home. Every racetrack was Kyle Busch’s home. He competed like he had something to prove every single race, when in reality he had already proven everything. What I think we’ll miss the most isn’t the wins. It’s the guy who quietly wanted to help a teammate, give some advice, who was the husband, the father, the guy who quietly did things for others when no one was watching,” O’Donnell told the crowd before addressing the Busch family.

“Samantha, I want you to know that this sport stands with you, and that you and your children are NASCAR family forever. Brexton and Lennix, your dad loves you with all his heart. Everyone gathered here, everyone behind you, everyone watching on TV, and all those people up in that grandstand, they are your family, and we’ve got you,” he said.

Samantha wept as her son, Brexton, comforted her, rubbing her arm and hugging her. The Busch family has yet to address Kyle’s passing outside of the statement revealing his cause of death.

About Brexton Busch

Brexton Busch is carrying on his family’s racing legacy. At the age of five, Brexton kicked off his racing career in the Beginner Box Stock division, earning his first win just a month later.

According to his website, the young Busch has amassed an impressive 100+ victories across numerous styles of race cars and tracks.

Before his father’s death, Brexton vowed to carry on the family racing legacy, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Tom Busch, uncle Kurt Busch, and dad, Kyle.

The day after Kyle’s passing, Brexton posted a subtle tribute to his dad by changing his Facebook profile picture to one of his dad embracing him. The photo was taken following Kyle’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Fr8 Racing 208 win in February.

Kyle Busch originally posted the photo on Instagram with a caption that read, “No. 68🏁 Pumped that @brextonbusch finally got to be here, I know this one means a LOT to him!”

Richard Childress Racing announced on Friday that Kyle Busch’s No. 8 will not be used again until Brexton is ready to race. Busch’s team said that the No. 8 was designed by Kyle and has become synonymous with his name. It’s only fitting that his son would be the next in line to use the number.

“No one can carry it forward to the level that he did,” Richard Childress Racing said. “The No. 8 is reserved and ready for Brexton Busch when he is ready to go NASCAR racing.”
