Kevin Bacon lost “millions” in a Ponzi scheme

Golden Globe Award-winning actor Kevin Bacon found himself in financial turmoil after he and his wife Kyra Sedgwick lost “most of our money” in Bernie Madoff’s $50 billion Ponzi scheme. Madoff was an American financier who committed one of the largest financial frauds of all time, swindling thousands of investors out of tens of billions of dollars over the course of 17 years or more.

The scandal came to light when the market crashed in 2008, and Madoff was unable to pay back investors. Bacon never confirmed just how much they lost in the scheme, but outlets report it to be millions of dollars.

Years later, the Footloose star reflected on the experience in an interview with The Guardian. He shared:

“It was a bad day. But pretty quickly we were able to see all the things we had as opposed to whatever we lost, and those are the biggest cliches: children, health, love, a nice home. So we got through it together.”

The pair share two children, Travis (34) and Sosie (31).

Kevin and Kyra embrace farm life

Kevin Bacon, now 65 years old, began acquiring the land that would eventually become his rural Connecticut farm in 1983. He and Kyra married in 1988 and have split their time between the farm and their Los Angeles and New York homes for the last two decades.

In recent years, it seems the couple has really leaned into farm life. They have filled the property with a “second family” of animals including goats, pigs, alpacas, and miniature horses. The actor often shares glimpses into life on the farm via social media and has gone viral for his “goat songs” videos.

Since owning farm animals, Bacon says he has altered his eating habits. He told PEOPLE:

“I no longer eat goat and I no longer eat pig, because I have goats and I have pigs.”

In addition to caring for their livestock, the pair has gained an affinity for cooking with the fresh produce that they grow on their property.

“I love animals, they are a joy to be around, and they’re very, very calming for me. But we also really love to go into the garden and get fresh herbs or tomatoes or basil or peppers or zucchini.”

While Kevin and Kyra still travel to New York and Los Angeles often for work, it is refreshing to see them embrace a simpler way of life after enduring a major hardship and shifting their perspective.
