Post-presidency, President Carter became known for his work with the nonprofit Habitat for Humanity. He and his wife, Rosalynn, also co-founded the Carter Center, an organization with the mission “to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health” around the world.

His humanitarian work led him to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Carter battled some health problems in the last few years of his life. He entered hospice care in February 2023.

Just a few months later, Rosalynn Carter died on November 19, 2023, at the age of 96. President Carter made his last public appearance at her funeral. He celebrated his 100th birthday on October 1.

On Sunday (December 29), President Carter’s son, Chip, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that his father passed away around 3:45 PM that day at his home in Plains, Georgia.

According to a statement from The Carter Center, “public observances” for President Carter will be held in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. The final arrangements for his state funeral are still pending.

The Carter Center stated that President Carter will be buried during a private ceremony at his home in Plains, Georgia. He’ll be laid to rest beside Rosalynn, his wife of 77 years.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter shared four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Both Jimmy and Rosalynn were born in Plains. In 1961, the couple built a modest, ranch-style home in the city. They lived there before and after Jimmy became president.

Rosalynn was laid to rest on the property after she passed away in 2023. Now, President Jimmy Carter will be buried in the same spot.

PEOPLE reports the Carters’ gravestones will be by a willow tree near the edge of a pond. The Carters’ property was deeded to the National Park Service, which will eventually transform the grounds into a museum.

The Carter Center encourages the public to visit the official tribute website for President Carter at www.jimmycartertribute.org. Those wishing to honor the late President may donate to The Carter Center in lieu of sending flowers.

Our prayers go out to the Carter family during this difficult time…
