Attendees at a Nashville-area church were in for a surprise Sunday morning (August 11) when country superstar Carrie Underwood joined the choir on stage.

Carrie Underwood and her husband, retired NHL pro Mike Fisher, have long been vocal about their Christian faith. Both Carrie and Mike grew up in church, with Carrie crediting her home church in Checotah, Oklahoma, with allowing her to sing in public for the first time.

In an interview with MovieGuide, Carrie shared that it was important to her and her husband to raise their sons, Isaiah and Jacob, in church.

“Mike and I do all we can to raise our two boys with values like the ones I grew up with in Checotah,” Underwood explained. “Down-to-earth, church on Sundays, plenty of grass and trees and space outside for them to roam. At night, when we put the boys to bed, we pray out loud with them. Just talking to God, letting them know he hears their every word.”

In 2021, the American Idol champ released her first hymns-only album, a project titled “My Savior” that includes 13 tracks that she grew up singing in church. Among the songs found on the album is “How Great Thou Art,” a song she gained praise for when she sang it with Vince Gill in 2011.

Vince and Carrie teamed up to sing the beloved hymn for the Superstar Women of Country Music television event. The performance earned a standing ovation from the live crowd and has since garnered tens of millions of views across all platforms.

On Sunday morning (August 11), churchgoers at Rolling Hills Community Church in Franklin, Tennessee, were treated to a surprise appearance from Carrie Underwood.

Videos posted by those in attendance show Carrie Underwood on stage with the worship team and choir. Dressed in a simple, beautiful dress and sandals and without the stage makeup and hair fans are used to seeing her in, Carrie helped lead the congregation in worship.

“Unexpected blessing this morning the voice of an angel… I always get to church early to hear the music and today was a little different!” one parishioner wrote alongside a video.

Another wrote, “This was a sweet surprise and it blessed me so much. It’s amazing to hear her sing about God as her passion is very evident.”
