The world lost the man known as the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, on September 4, 2006. While we lost a man we loved to watch on television, Bindi and Robert Irwin lost their father, and Terri Irwin lost her husband.

Steve rose to fame thanks to his wildlife series The Crocodile Hunter and was filming a documentary titled Ocean’s Deadliest when he was stung by a stingray. The stingray’s poisonous barb on its tail went up and into his chest, piercing a hole in his heart.

Bindi once told PEOPLE, “I remember people coming up to me and saying, ‘I’m sorry for your loss, sweetheart. Time heals all wounds.’ But that’s just not true. It’s like losing a part of your heart, and when you’ve lost that, you never get it back.”

Even though many years have passed since Steve’s death, Bindi made an emotional confession to PEOPLE Magazine in July 2019 – that she still cries when she sees footage of her father.

She said that on an ordinary day, “we were playing the video where we petition against harvesting of crocodile eggs. There’s old footage of dad with the crocodiles and, even though I’ve seen the video maybe 50 times, that day I started crying.”

Bindi and her family have dedicated their lives to continuing Steve’s legacy, working and living at the Australia Zoo and promoting wildlife preservation.

February 22, 2020 marked what would have been Steve’s 58th birthday and Bindi took to Instagram to pay tribute to her father.

Along with a photo of her and her dad laughing while feeding what looks to be a porcupine, she wrote, “Dad, Today is your birthday. I had an extra strong cup of tea just how you liked it. I hugged Mum for you and told her how much we love her. Robert and I went on a hike through the mountains you cherished. I watched one of your documentaries with [fiancé] Chandler and shared stories about you. I walked through your office in the zoo and smiled at our old family photographs.”

Bindi continued, “Today and every day I miss you and love you beyond description. You’re always with me. ❤️”
