During the Tuesday night (July 16) episode of America’s Got Talent, a Virginia police officer stole the show.
Mervin Mayo lives in Richmond, Virginia, where he is a police officer and works with at-risk youth. He explained to the America’s Got Talent judges that he grew up in the projects and participated in a program called the Police Athletic League as a kid. A police officer took Mayo under his wing and that saved his life.
Mayo then decided to dedicate his life to becoming a police officer and helping kids just like him. For the last 17 years, that’s exactly what he has been doing. Mayo admitted that he had seen more murders as a child than as a police officer, to paint a picture of how dangerous the projects are, and why he wants to help the kids there.
He has also been singing at karaoke bars with his friends and after much convincing from his wife, he finally made it to AGT auditions.
The judges were already inspired by his story, and were hopeful for what was coming next.
Mayo sat behind the keyboard and began playing the instrumental intro to Ed Sheeran’s romantic ballad “Thinking Out Loud.”
The song was released in 2014 as part of his album X and features heartfelt lyrics about enduring love and a melody that blends pop and soul influences. It became a commercial success, topping charts worldwide and earning Sheeran two Grammy Awards. The accompanying music video, which showcases Sheeran performing a choreographed ballroom dance routine, further boosted its popularity. “Thinking Out Loud” is celebrated for its emotional depth and has become a favorite at weddings and romantic occasions. Its timeless message and soothing tune continue to resonate with listeners.
Throughout the performance, Mayo would glance over at the side stage, where his wife was watching him. When he was done singing, he began blowing kisses to her. At the same time, the audience jumped to their feet to give him a standing ovation.
The judges remained seated, but they were visibly impressed by what they just saw. They all advanced him to the next round of competition! We can’t wait to see what he will perform next!
