The Voice has been airing since 2011 and has been one of NBC’s top ranking shows. Out of the show, numerous versions have aired around the world including The Voice Senior, which is a Dutch version of the show that only features contestants ages 60 and up.
One of these contestants was 71-year-old René Bishop. Bishop performed a rendition of “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers.
“Unchained Melody” was written for the 1955 prison movie Unchained, where the main character wrestles with escaping prison to live life on the run or finishing his sentence to return home to his wife and family. The highly recognizable song was most notably popularized by The Righteous Brothers as well as Elvis Presley.
Bishop’s soft and silky voice blended perfectly with the lyrics and he even sounded like Elvis when he sang the lower register parts of the song.
The coaches listened intently and all of them expressed interest by hitting the button for “I want you” as soon as he hit the high note of the song.
The performance went viral and the video of Bishop singing has over 17 million views on YouTube.
