Luke Grimes Talks About The End Of Yellowstone
Luke Grimes opened up to Esquire about his time in Yellowstone and whether he would continue playing the iconic Kayce Dutton.
As Yellowstone comes to a conclusion, the cast is taking time to reflect on their experiences with the hit show. In the previous episode, a significant revelation is made: Kayce has devised a plan to save the ranch.
When asked how it felt to be the character potentially responsible for “saving the day,” Grimes joked, “It was a running joke on set that the dumb cowboy figured it out.”
Grimes continued on to say:
“Kayce’s kind of the silent killer, and it’s great whenever he gets to use that energy for something good. He’s a character who is under his father’s thumb—just sinking into the background because he would rather be not noticed than have to do the shit his dad wanted him to do. Now he gets to step up and figure everything out. So, it was a nice payoff for me.”

Will Luke Grimes Continue To Play Kayce Dutton?
Luke Grimes shared reasons for possibly not returning to Yellowstone. He said:
“It feels like good timing. Seven years is a long time to do anything, and I had never played a character for more than a few months before. I’ve loved all of it. But there is a part of it that—once you read those final episodes—sees that there’s a finality to it.”
Like many creatives and artists, Grimes expresses the common desire for new challenges. The cast of The Office requested to end the show after nine seasons, while The Big Bang Theory continued for 12 years before concluding. It’s understandable that the actors would be eager to take on new characters.
However, besides the personal desire for something new, there is also the added practicality of Grimes’s character Kayce’s desires. Could the cowboy even logically continue to a spin-off?
When asked if he would continue to a spin-off, Grimes responds directly:
“There’s always talks of spin-offs. I’d do it [but] I just don’t understand how it would work once the story ends. Kayce wants to cowboy and be happy with his family. He doesn’t want to kill people anymore. He doesn’t want the weight of a huge mega-ranch that isn’t sustainable in today’s times. He wants his little slice of heaven. It’s that simple.”
He would continue, but it seems that a spin-off for Kayce is unlikely. However, that doesn’t mean it’s completely out of the realm of possibility. There have been rumors of a spin-off focusing on Rip and Beth.
Only time will tell if Yellowstone fans are going to get more of the epic drama.
In the meantime, watch the teaser for the final episode, which will air this Sunday, December 15th, at 8/7c, below.
