Wicked Took Over Dancing With The Stars On Tuesday (Oct. 21)

The Dancing With The Stars ballroom turned into Oz, the Ozdust Ballroom, and Shiz University for one night only to pay tribute to the hit movie Wicked and its upcoming sequel Wicked: For Good. The director of both movies, Jon M. Chu, was the guest judge for the pink and green-themed night.

Wicked and Wicked: For Good are film adaptations of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Wicked, which debuted in 2003. The musical is based on a book, which was written as an unofficial prequel to The Wizard of Oz.

Wicked tells the story of Elphaba Thropp (The Wicked Witch in Wizard of Oz) and Galinda Upland (The Good Witch in the 1939 film), who meet at Shiz University and are forced to be roommates despite their disdain for each other. Over time, the two become best friends, but are torn apart by the great Wizard of Oz. The movies recreate all the incredible show-stopping songs, and the second movie is said to have a couple originals to add to the story.

Wicked night on Dancing With The Stars took us chronologically through both films with their musical numbers “The Wizard and I,” “What Is This Feeling,” “Dancing Through Life,” “Popular,” “I’m Not That Girl,” “One Short Day,” “Defying Gravity,” “As Long As You’re Mine,” “No Good Deed,” and “For Good.”

It also included a show-stopping medley of songs choreographed by the Wicked movie choreographer Christopher Scott!

Elaine Hendrix and Danielle Fichel earned their highest scores so far, both earning 36/40 (all 9s)! Comedian Andy Richter also earned his first 8 of the season, while two performers earned a perfect 10!

Performing fourth, reality star Whitney Leavitt performed a quickstep to a fun arrangement of “Popular” with her pro partner Mark Ballas. Both dressed head to toe in pink, the pair packed in the quickstep content to earn three 10s and a 9, which marked the first person to earn a 10 in the entire competition!

Leavitt held on to the top spot on the leaderboard for the rest of the show, until the very final number.

Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles and her pro partner closed the night with a Rumba to the final song of the entire movie series, “For Good.” The rumba is the dance of love, and it’s a perfect pairing for “For Good,” which is a love song between two friends.

Sosa did mention that it would be difficult to portray the love aspect since they are portraying friends, but they absolutely nailed it.

After their incredible dance, they received incredible feedback from the judges, with Bruno Tonioli saying that Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba in the movies, would be so proud of her. When it came time for scoring, she received three 10s and a 9, tying Leavitt at the top of the leaderboard.

Chiles and Sosa were so shocked by the scores that the professional dancer hit the floor multiple times, the gold medalist was running around, the sound cut out on the broadcast reportedly because one or both of them were cussing.
