Oliver Anthony shook up the music industry three weeks ago with the release of his song “Rich Men North of Richmond” on YouTube. In the days that followed, the singer whose real name is Christopher Lunsford, uploaded the song along with several others to streaming services. The result was an almost immediate takeover of the streaming charts.
The previously unknown singer from rural Virginia had suddenly found himself as one of the biggest artists to hit the scene in years. “Rich Men North of Richmond” and Oliver Anthony made history by debuting atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart as the only artist to ever do so with no previous chart history. He dethroned Morgan Wallen and beat out the likes of Luke Combs and Taylor Swift for the top spot two weeks running.

Oliver Anthony’s unlikely success story had new fans anxious to learn everything they could about him. In a post made to Facebook, Lunsford introduced himself, saying that his stage name is a nod to his grandfather and his Appalachian upbringing. The singer added that he dropped out of high school in 2010 at the age of 17, and later earned his GED before working multiple jobs that allowed him to connect with blue collar workers. Those workers are what later inspired his songwriting.
Lunsford also shared that four years ago he purchased some land and is currently living in a camper that he bought off Craigslist for $750. One thing he failed to mention? That he is a husband and father!

One thing is certain….Christopher Lunsford aka Oliver Anthony isn’t going to let his newfound fame change him. In a Facebook post dated after “Rich Men North of Richmond” went viral, Anthony made it clear that he had no desire to be wealthy and be in the spotlight.
“People in the music industry give me blank stares when I brush off 8 million dollar offers,” he wrote. “I don’t want 6 tour buses, 15 tractor trailers and a jet. I don’t want to play stadium shows, I don’t want to be in the spotlight. I wrote the music I wrote because I was suffering with mental health and depression. These songs have connected with millions of people on such a deep level because they’re being sung by someone feeling the words in the very moment they were being sung.”
