Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman met in January of 2005 at an event in Los Angeles that honored Australians in the U.S. It took four months for Urban to get up the courage to call Kidman. By the end of the year they were engaged and, as they say, the rest is history.
The couple’s high-profile marriage may look effortless, but they make it very clear that a lot of effort goes into making their relationship work. It’s been 12 years since Keith and Nicole said “I do” and they’ve set some strict guidelines to help strengthen their marriage.

In a 2018 interview with Parade magazine, Nicole revealed one marriage rule that is getting a lot of attention. She and Keith have a strict no texting policy.
“We have our 12-year wedding anniversary tomorrow (June 25) and we’ve never texted. That is so not our relationship, which is interesting right? We call. We’ve done this since the very beginning,” Kidman said. “The reason it started at the beginning was because I didn’t know how to text [laughs] and it just kind of worked for us. So now we don’t. We just do voice to voice or skin to skin, as we always say.”
Kidman explained that the reason they don’t text is because they feel that texts can be misinterpreted at times, causing unnecessary confusion and drama.
The 51-year old actress also shared that a huge secret to their marriage success is to have no secrets at all. Keith and Nicole also truly enjoy spending time with each other and are willing to go to great lengths to protect their relationship.
“We never tell anybody any advice about their relationship or think that we have a secret. We just approach it with humility and hope and just really love hanging out. I mean it’s that simple. We love spending time together. We have a lot of fun together and we just choose each other. If there is one person I can hang out with, it’s him and the girls and that’s it. That’s so much enough for me,” Nicole said. “We’ll get on planes and fly overnight rather than have a night apart. We will do anything to make it work.”
