Jelly Roll has repeatedly proven that he has fully taken advantage of his second chance at life.
Throughout Jelly Roll’s teen years and early twenties, he was in and out of jail for different charges and felonies that included possession of marijuana and aggravated robbery. He even received his GED in prison at the age of 23.
After his prison stints, Jelly Roll turned his life around and even gave back to the places where he had spent time. Earlier this year, he handed out diplomas to inmates who received their GEDs in jail, just like him.
Not long after, he received a haircut from an inmate who had just received his barber’s certificate.
The Grammy-nominated singer stopped by the Genesee County Jail in Michigan to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a music studio built in the jail.
While there, the Sheriff’s Department surprised him by swearing him in as a Sheriff’s Deputy.
Standing behind the podium, Sheriff Swanson announced, “It is my honor to extend, a deputy status, and he’s going to be sworn in today as a deputy sheriff for the county of Genesse, right here, in Flint, Michigan, with his own badge.”
Applause erupted, with Jelly Roll – whose real name is Jason DeFord – flashing a huge smile.
The Sheriff continued, “Ladies and gentleman, get your cameras ready, Jason, will you stand right here, and raise your right hand? This is your badge, this is the real deal, you walk into any facility now, you can tell them you’re a deputy sheriff for Genesse County!”
Jelly Roll proudly held up his badge and flashed his signature smile once again.
Radio station 995 WYCD shared the moment on their Instagram with the caption, “From convict to deputy, baby!”
