Season 16 of American Idol had kicked off a whole new style of show, this time aired on ABC and produced with a lot more special effects.
Beyond just the special effects, guest performances, and new music during the season finale last night (May 21st), there was a whole other level of surprise in store for folks – and nobody would have ever been able to predict it!
It was just down to Gabby Barrett, Maddie Poppe, and Caleb Lee Hutchison as finalists – but Barrett was eliminated leaving just Poppe and Hutchison as the final two.

Set to perform a song together before the big reveal, Caleb and Maddie gave up their biggest secret yet…
“Well, you know, Maddie’s like my best pal,” he said to Ryan Seacrest. “I’ve known her since the beginning of Hollywood Week, and you know, she, uh — she actually happens to be my girlfriend.”
That’s when the internet went head-over-heels wild about this newly-revealed couple!
