Amid Health Battle, Céline Dion Makes Surprise Appearance To Present Grammy For Album Of The Year
Céline Dion made a surprise appearance to present an important Grammy award at the 2024 ceremony. Her presence touched fans and her fellow artists, considering everything she’s been through health-wise in recent years.
In December 2022, Dion shared the news she’d been diagnosed with a rare disorder called Stiff Person Syndrome. She posted an emotional video detailing the symptoms she experiences.
Dion told her fans she experiences spasms that “affect every aspect of [her] daily life.” These spasms make it difficult for her to walk and also affect her ability to sing.

What Is Stiff Person Syndrome?
The Mayo Clinic defines Stiff Person Syndrome as:
“…a rare disorder of motor function characterized by involuntary stiffness of axial muscles and superimposed painful muscle spasms, which are often induced by startle or emotional stimuli.”
In the Summer of 2023, Dion’s sister Claudette shared an update on her condition. She said their other sister, Linda, moved in with Dion to help her in the midst of her health battle.
“When I call her and she’s busy, I speak to my sister Linda who lives with her and tells me that she’s working hard,” Claudette said. “She’s listening to the top researchers in the field of this rare disease as much as possible.”
Céline Dion Moved By Crowd’s Response To Her Surprise Appearance At The 2024 Grammy Awards
Dion canceled her tour plans after receiving her diagnosis. She hasn’t been seen in public much since.
But on Sunday (February 4), Céline Dion made her first public appearance in several months to present the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
Dion appeared moved by the crowd’s warm response and standing ovation. With tears in her eyes, she said:
“Thank you all. I love you right back. When I say that I’m happy to be here, I really mean it from my heart.”
