Ice can be one of the more dangerous types of terrain – even for a bear. In a recent video one gets a glimpse of just how dangerous trying to cross frozen water can be.
The video shows a rather large bear attempting to cross a frozen section of a lake in Tahoe, California. As the animal ventures onto the ice you can hear the ice crack under the bear’s weight before it breaks the ice and falls into the frigid water underneath.

The person who uploaded the video explained the background story in the caption writing,
“My family was invited to celebrate one of my good friend’s birthday in Lake Tahoe. She rented the house through Airbnb and this is their backyard where we witness this event. On the original video you will hear when the ice started to crack. These whole scenario lasted 4 mins. My friends tried to call Animal Control, but before they were able to speak to someone, the bear was able to pull himself up.”
As a healthy reminder there is always risk involved when crossing a frozen lake or river. If the ice gives way, it can cause hypothermia and ultimately drowning. Luckily for this bear, things turned out okay.
