Season 28 Of The Voice Premiered On Monday Night (September 22)

While we did thoroughly enjoy Reba McEntire, Niall Horan, Snoops Dogg, and Michael Bublé’s rendition of The Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker,” we could not wait for the season to begin.

As most fans know, Michael Bublé won the last two seasons and is going for a historic three-peat, which has only happened once before in Season 2, 3, and 4 when Blake Shelton won with Jermaine Paul, Cassadee Pope and Danielle Bradbury, respectively.

But, Bublé is out for blood as he attempts this feat!

Season 28 Introduced A New “Game-Changing” Rule

Just one week before the Season 28 premiere, The Voice revealed they were going to introduce a brand-new game-changing rule.

The new rule is called the “Carson Callback” and gives host Carson Daly power like he’s never had before! In a clip prior to the Season premiere, Daly is heard saying, ““Sometimes I see great singers fall through the cracks. And I’ve never been able to do anything about it…until now.

The clip then showed a card that said “Carson Callback” on it, followed by the coaches pressing their buttons and seeing the stage lit up with “Carson Callback,” leaving them confused.

What is happening, Carson Daly?!“ Bublé asked.

At the time, NBC revealed, “It’s safe to assume the Carson Callback will allow Daly to ‘call back’ an Artist who doesn’t advance in the competition. But you’ll have to tune in to learn more about when and how Daly will be able to deploy this new power.

The Voice then revealed that Carson will get to surprise “one no-chair-turn artist with a shot to sing again during the Blind Auditions.”

Carson Used His One “Carson Callback” In The Season Premiere

25-year-old Ryan Mitchell took The Voice stage and performed Cage The Elephant’s “Cigarette Daydreams.” Although the judges later stated that his performance was quite good, none of them turned for him.

Bublé seemed to regret his decision the most, saying, “You have a really good voice. It’s solid, your pitch is perfect, you have perfect control of your vibrato. What scared me a bit is it’s so stylized. I probably should have pressed my button.”

Horan said his reason for not turning was, “I felt like I could have heard different sides of it … if I would’ve heard a touch more dynamic.”

McEntire added, “There’s been a lot of people that have come back, tried a different song, take a different angle. You never know what’ll happen.”

Of course, she meant that the contestants come back during a different season, not the same one! In fact, Ralph Edwards, who made it on Team Snoop Dogg this episode, revealed that this was the 12th time he had auditioned for The Voice. So, it could happen!

Snoop Dogg chose to leave Mitchell with some words of encouragement: “Each one of us has been told no, many many times, but it didn’t stop us. This no will become a yes sooner than later.”

Mitchell made his way backstage to meet up with his family and Daly, who was with them., and was visibly upset.

“I’m really frustrated,” he told Mitchell. “Sometimes the coaches just don’t get it right. We rarely get an alt-rock artist like you on the show anymore. Singers like yourself fall through the cracks sometimes, and I’ve never been able to do anything about it until right now.”

He continued, explaining the Carson Callback rule, “You’re just too good to let go. I can only do this once and from what I just heard, I’m gonna give you the Callback card.”

The host told Mitchell, “Pick a new song. You have 24 hours to prepare a new song for this second and last chance.”

Watch Mitchell’s audition and Daly use his Callback Card, below. Tune in Tuesday night (September 23rd) to watch Mitchell’s Callback performance.
