A Six Flags Amusement Park In California May Be Closing Its Doors Soon

Six Flags California’s Great America in Santa Clara is expected to close after 50 years.

Reports say the lease on the land is set to expire, and unless it’s renewed, the park will be shutting down after its 27th season.

The decision was publicly announced by Six Flags’ Chief Financial Officer, Brian Witherow, during the company’s Investor Day in May.

“Unless we decide to extend, and exercise one of our options to extend that lease, that park’s last year without that extension would be after the ‘27 season,” Witherow said, per PEOPLE.

News of the park’s closure came shortly after it was revealed that an amusement park in Bowie, Maryland, along with its water park, Hurricane Harbor, will shut down at the end of this year. It is the only Six Flags park in the state.

“Those are two parks that are very low on the ranking of margins,” Witherow said.

As for the Santa Clara location, the potential closure wouldn’t happen until 2027.

The 112-acre park originally opened in 1976 by the Marriott Corporation.

Ownership of the park has changed quite a bit over the past few decades. It began when Santa Clara acquired it from Marriott in 1985, then sold it to Kings Entertainment Company in 1989.

While the city retained ownership of the land, the park itself was acquired by Paramount Parks in 1992 and later by Cedar Fair in 2006. Eventually, Santa Clara sold the land to Cedar Fair, which later sold it to Prologis, a real estate and supply chain logistics company.

Although there are plans to close the park when the lease ends, there is an option to extend it for another five years, which could keep the Six Flags location open until 2033.

An official announcement on the closure date of Six Flags California’s Great America in Santa Clara has not been confirmed yet.
