Chip and Joanna Gaines’ much-anticipated renovation of a century-old hotel in Waco is complete! The Fixer Upper couple announced last week that they are now taking reservations for the 33-room venue.

Chip and Joanna Gaines are no strangers to renovation projects. The Texas couple got famous doing exactly that! So, it’s no surprise that they took on a project of monumental proportions when they purchased the former Grand Karem Shrine building in downtown Waco to make it into a hotel.

Thousands of fans of the Gaines’ make their way to Waco, Texas, every year to visit the Silos, a series of specialty shops, a bakery, coffee shop and more, as well as their Magnolia Table restaurant. Now visiting fans will have a place to stay to complete their Gaines experience.

Chip and Joanna first announced plans to renovate the Waco landmark in 2019.

“We are, without a doubt, firm believers that home is the most important place on earth. But we’ve also learned that home can be found beyond a physical dwelling. It encompasses more than the place where our mail is delivered. Home is a feeling, created by and for the people you love and share your life with; it’s a state of being known and loved just as you are,” Joanna wrote on her blog in 2019. “That is our dream for this hotel—that it would serve as an extension of the way we feel about our own home and all it represents to us, and that every guest who comes to stay would experience that same sense of belonging and community.”

The hotel, named Hotel1928 in honor of the year the building was constructed, features four floors with 33 guest rooms, a ballroom and event space, a rooftop terrace and “three distinct restaurants, each with its own carefully created menu and surroundings that reflect the fun-loving yet sophisticated, spirit of the times.”

The Restaurants at Hotel 1928

Bertie’s on the Rooftop offers “seasonal dishes” with rooftop views. The website states that Bertie’s is a nod to the original architects of the Hotel 1928 building, Roy Ellsworth Lane and Herbert M. Greene.

The Brasserie boasts a menu of “southern classics with a Texas twist.” And the Cafe at Hotel 1928 considers itself an “all-day destination.” Found behind the lobby, the cafe offers coffee, baked goods and “light bites.” See photos of the restaurants at Hotel 1928.
