More than 100 years ago, Louis G. Kaufman built what would become the largest and most expensive log cabin estate in the U.S.

Thoughts of log cabin living often invoke visions of a cozy abode tucked deep into the mountains where one can cozy up to the fireplace and cook dinner on a rustic wood-burning stove. But one Michigan visionary took his log cabin dreams to another level.

Banker and financier Louis G. Kaufman built the exquisite home between 1919 and 1923. With a budget of over $5 million (the equivalent of more than $78 million today), Kaufman hired roughly 400 Scandanavian craftsmen to build a luxurious summer home he called Granot Loma.

Situated on 5,000 acres in northern Michigan, Granot Loma is the largest and most expensive log cabin in the United States. The 26,000-square-foot home, called the Lodge, is crafted from Oregon pine and serves as the centerpiece of this vast estate.

The Lodge boasts a 60-foot-long great room, 26 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, and 26 fireplaces. It is jam-packed with exquisite details, like a chandelier made from the root of a giant tree that is covered in wood carvings of insects and animals, and history. The massive industrial kitchen was modeled after the White House kitchen. A piano located in the great room was once played by renowned composer, George, and the mantel of the 30-foot fireplace was constructed from the beam of a sunken ship found in Lake Superior.

A farm, apple orchard, 13 outside buildings, an indoor boathouse, a private marina, and one mile of private Lake Surperior frontage complete the massive estate.

Taxes on the property are reportedly more than $55,000 a year.

In 1987, Granot Loma was purchased by Tom Baldwin, investor and founder of the Baldwin Group of companies.

Baldwin spent nearly two years and $4 million to restore the property to its former glory. In 1991, Granot Loma was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and Tom Baldwin reportedly still resides there.

Fun Fact: Barbara Mandrell’s Fontanel Mansion is reportedly the only home in the United States with more indoor living space than Granot Loma. But, Granot Loma’s entire estate, including acreage, is the most vast in the country.
