Riley Green Released “Jesus Saves” In 2024
Riley Green included “Jesus Saves” on his 2021 EP Way Out Here. The album, which hit No. 29 on Billboard‘s Top Country Albums chart, also includes the hit song “Worst Way.”
While sitting down with Zach Sang for an interview, Sang asked Green which song of his resonates the most with him.
“I really love ‘Jesus Saves.’ It’s about a guy, on the side of the road in Nashville, Tennessee, homeless guy, who tells this story, [he’s] a US Army veteran, he kinda goes through all these things that could happen in his life that put him in that situation,” Green explains. “I thought the message of that was really good. It was just, you don’t really know what someone’s been through, you’re always quick to judge when you see somebody in that situation, whether they’re on drugs or they’re an alcoholic or whatever. I tried to think of things that maybe they happened to you, maybe you’d be in that same situation. You know, everyday problems.”
Green revealed that “Jesus Saves” wasn’t a single or focus track of any kind, but fans also resonated with the message, so it became sort of an underground hit. When asked how he found this veteran to tell his story, Green admits he made the character up.
The song was inspired by him driving through Nashville and seeing a person on the side of the road with a cardboard sign that said, “Jesus Saves.”
He says it made him think about what he would write to win someone over on just a little piece of cardboard.
