Actor Graham Greene Passed Away On September 1
Graham Greene, an actor who has 188 acting credits to his name, died on Monday, September 1st following a lengthy illness, according to his agent, Michael Greene.
Though Graham and his agent share a last name, they are not related.
“He was a great man of morals, ethics, and character and will be eternally missed. You are finally free. Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven,” Michael said in a statement to Deadline.
Smith was Graham’s agent for many years before she died in 2013.
Graham’s Career Was one For The Books
Greene was born in Ohsweken, Ontario, Canada, on the Six Nations Reserve and worked odd jobs until the 1970s, when he dove into acting in Canadian and English theater productions.
His TV debut came in 1979, followed by his big screen debut in 1983’s Running Brave. He landed his big break when he was cast as Kicking Bird in Kevin Costner’s Dances With Wolves. The movie was incredibly received and earned 12 Academy Award nominations, winning seven, including Best Picture.
Greene earned a Best Supporting actor nod and was a launching pad for his career.

Other notable credits include The Green Mile, Wind River, Maverick, and Thunderheart, acting alongside the likes of Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Bruce Willis, Tom Hanks, Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, and of course, Costner.
Graham’s Co-Star & Close Friend Reacts To His Passing
In 1992’s Thunderheart, he starred alongside Val Kilmer, Sam Shepard, Fred Ward, and Sheila Tousey. One of the supporting roles was an FBI Agent played by Rex Linn. Rex is a longtime character actor, who country fans best know as Emmet on Happy’s Place, and also Reba McEntire’s longtime boyfriend.

After hearing the news of Graham’s passing, Rex took to Instagram to share a few touching words.
“Mr. Graham Greene, my brother. You really did teach me so many things. Most importantly to be kind,” the actor wrote. “Fly free over the Six Nations. RIP. Swipe right to read the last text message Graham sent me just a week ago.”
Rex shared three images: a black-and-white photo of Graham, a photo of himself and Graham, and Graham’s final text to him.
The text read:
“Rex, life is a beautiful day if you want it to be. I learned how fragile we really are, we have no control over what fate holds but, nobody can tell us not to be at peace, happy and loving. That’s our gift to ourselves. I’m not ready to put my saddle on the fence as long as I walk the good path. Be happy and peaceful and loving Brother.”

In April 2025, Linn served as the host of a Q&A panel with Ronnie Dunn, Kix Brooks, and Greene during the Western Heritage Awards
Although it seems the singers had never met the actor before, they struck up a good friendship that day. Upon hearing about Greene’s passing, Dunn took to social media to pay tribute to the actor.
“Kix and I were awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in OKC and Graham Greene was inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers in April this year,” he wrote alongside a photo from the event. “We had the honor of joining him on a Q&A panel that day. Such a great storyteller and actor ! Sad to lose an icon like this. Rest in peace, friend!”
