NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson and his family are mourning the deaths of his wife’s mother, father and 11-year-old nephew.

TMZ reported Tuesday that Jack and Terry Janway and an 11-year-old boy were found deceased in their Muskogee, Oklahoma, home Monday night (June 26). Police responded to the home after a woman called 911 to report someone in the home with a gun before hanging up.

Upon arrival officers found one victim, identified as Jack Janway, deceased in the hallway inside the home. Shortly after, another gunshot was heard from further inside the house. Jack Janway was pulled outside, and Terry and Dalton Janway were found dead inside the house, according to a statement from authorities.

All three victims died from gunshot wounds, police said. KOTV News reports that Terry shot Jack and their grandson Dalton before shooting herself.

Jack and Terry Janway’s daughter, Chandra, married Jimmie Johnson in 2004 after being introduced by NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon. Neither Chandra nor Jimmie have made a statement regarding the tragedy. But, Legacy Motor Club issued a statement saying that Jimmie will not be racing at this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series event in Chicago and that “The Johnson family has asked for privacy at this time and no further statements will be made.”

This isn’t the first tragedy to strike the Janway and Johnson families. In 2014, Chandra’s brother, Jordan, died in a skydiving accident at the age of 27.

Jack and Terry are also parents to Marianne Janway Robinson and Caleb Janway.

Who is Jimmie Johnson?

Jimmie Johnson is a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and is currently tied with Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt for the most Cup Series wins.

In 2020, the driver announced that it would be his last season as a full-time driver, but returned to the sport as a part-time driver in 2023 after purchasing an ownership stake in Petty GMS Motorsports. Johnson is considered to be one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history.

Jimmie married his wife, Chandra, in 2004 and the couple share two daughters: Genevieve and Lydia.
