There’s no doubt that now is the perfect time to pick up a new hobby, learn a new skill or perfect a craft. For one particular Sacramento resident, that’s exactly what he’s doing.
California was the first to have a statewide lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic and Juan Najera has taken full advantage of the stay-at-home order by picking up a new hobby building picnic tables for squirrels.
Because of the pandemic, many California residents are spending more time in their backyards and these critter-sized tables provide lots of entertainment since squirrels actually use them. As a result, Juan has already made 75 of them with another 43 on a waiting list. Juan explained how they work during an interview with CBS Sacramento.
“You set it outside, you can put a little treat…Squirrels come up, birds come up.”
Juan was originally inspired with the idea after he saw a post on Facebook where someone had built their own miniature table. With scrap wood leftover from various projects around the house he started building them for kids, eventually the word got out and now even adults are asking for one.
In some cases, the recipients of these tables are taking them to the next level and staining them or even painting them different ways.
During another interview with Good Day Sacramento, Juan has his face mask on but it can’t hide the smile and happiness behind it knowing how many people (and squirrels) he’s helped during this pandemic.
