Lainey Wilson admits she told one little lie during her first date with her now-fiancé, Devlin “Duck” Hodges.
Wilson and her longtime partner, former NFL player Devlin Hodges, have become one of country music’s favorite couples since going public with their relationship.
They made their red carpet debut at the 2023 ACM Awards. Although this was the first time fans learned they were a couple, Wilson and Hodges had actually been together privately for two years by then.

Naturally, once they went public, fans had plenty of questions about their relationship. Shortly after their debut, Wilson told PEOPLE why she and Hodges decided to keep their relationship a secret for so long.
“I said, ‘We gonna see if you’re in it for the right reasons.’ Turns out, he is,” she said.
And while she wanted to be sure about things, Wilson admitted that from the very first date, she could tell it was going to be something special. She’s shared before that Hodges took her to an old dive bar that served free beer and wine.
“I was like, ‘This boy likes to ball on a budget too. This is gonna work out,’” she recalled.
Well, it clearly worked out, because in February of this year, they got engaged. Hodges proposed to the “Hang Tight Honey” singer on the front porch of George Jones’ former Tennessee estate.
Lainey Wilson Shares The Lie She Told Devlin Hodges On Their First Date
In a more recent interview, Wilson revisited that first date and revealed that she may have told Hodges a little lie that could’ve been what made him fall for her so quickly.
While chatting with Southern Living, she explained how Hodges got his nickname “Duck,” which has now become what almost everyone calls him.
“He said he was playing football at Samford [University], and the coach there [said], ‘You remind me of one of my favorite quarterbacks ever, and his name was Duck,” Wilson explained. “And he had a really good season that year. And so the whole team started saying, “It’s Duck season; it’s Duck season!’ So that’s how he got Duck.”
After she learned this on their date, Wilson couldn’t help but crack a joke about it.
“I told him that people call me Goose,” she admitted. “I was lying, but he fell for it. I think he was like, ‘Oh, I’m in love.’”
Wilson didn’t reveal how long she let Hodges believe it, but it’s safe to say he probably found out pretty quickly.
Clearly, her little lie didn’t matter, though, because the two have been inseparable ever since.
