Lainey Wilson Shares Never-Before-Seen Photo From The Night She Met Her Fiancé, Reveals She Was “So Broke” At The Time

Lainey Wilson‘s now-fiancé, Devlin “Duck” Hodges, didn’t know it at the time, but she was “so broke” the night they met.

The couple met through mutual friends in February 2021. Their first date was at a place called Silverados, where they served free beer and wine from 5-10 PM. “I was like, ‘This boy likes to ball on a budget too. This is gonna work out,” Wilson previously told PEOPLE.

She shared elements of their love story in her 2024 song “Yesterday, All Day, Every Day.” It includes the lyrics, “Cowd was line dancing and we were clinking bottles, d—, it kinda feel like we done and hit the lotto, Free beer from five to ten.”

After their first date, Wilson (correctly) predicted that Hodges would be her future husband. However, they kept their relationship private for two years before going public at the ACM Awards in 2023.

In a new clip previewing Wilson’s upcoming Netflix documentary, Keepin’ Country Cool, the singer shared a more emotional part of the story about the night she met Hodges.

The clip shows Wilson holding up her phone, revealing a never-before-seen photo from her and Hodges’ first date. The selfie-style snapshot shows Wilson smiling while Hodges held up a beer.

Although Wilson appeared happy, a sense of sadness lingered under the otherwise joyful night.

I was broke,” she confessed, her eyes appearing a little teary. “I was so broke when we met. And he thought I was doing a little bit better than I was. But a few weeks after we met, my sister had to Venmo me a couple hundred bucks.”

Wilson’s longtime fans may recall that she lived in a camper when she first moved to Nashville. The camper was parked outside of a recording studio, and the studio’s owner helped her pay for her electricity and water bills.
