Kenny Chesney Shares Never-Before-Told Stories About His Life In New Book

Kenny Chesney has a lot to thank his mom for, including the reason why he went bald as a teenager.

Earlier this year, Kenny Chesney announced that he would be releasing his first book, Heart Life Music.

While it isn’t a memoir, the book will share stories and moments from his life that he believes made him the person he is today.

In a statement shared by the “summertime” singer, Chesney described the project as a “love letter to the people who shaped and inspired me.”

He Blames His Premature Baldness On His Mom

One of the people who made the biggest impact on his life was Chesney’s mom, Karen, and for more reasons than one.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE ahead of his upcoming book release, Chesney told the outlet how his signature bald look came to be. And it turns out, he completely blames his mom for it.

Growing up, Chesney’s mom worked as a local hairdresser, which meant he often had to be her test subject a little more than he would’ve liked.

“My mom went to beauty school — my God, she’s going to kill us [for this story]— and I was her guinea pig on how to do stuff. And I’d go to school smelling like all these chemicals,” he said.

Chesney can only assume that this is the reason he started losing his hair so early. The recent Country Music Hall of Fame inductee said his hair began falling out in clumps when he was just nineteen.

“When I got older, I remember playing high school football, and I’d take my helmet off, and I’d see all this hair in there, and I was freaking out!,” he revealed.

However, now that he’s older, he realizes that it might have been a blessing in disguise after all.

“Now though, in my life, I’m really glad that happened early because I have friends my age who are losing their hair, and they are really freaking out,” Chesney said. “In ways, I don’t really age… I kind of stay the same because of it!”

Even though it was hard to deal with at the time, describing his early hair loss as “socially traumatic,” it wasn’t long after that Chesney found his true calling in life, so it didn’t feel like such a big issue anymore.

“Just a few years after going through that, I was the guy in the corner playing music, and that changed my life.”

But Chesney says he credits his mom for much more than just his bald head.

The two have always had a very close relationship, and he got his “love of the ocean, the love of sunlight, the love of music, and the love of love” from her.

So, when it comes to losing his hair, he doesn’t hold it against her too much… even if she still won’t admit that she caused it!

“My mom is great,” Chesney adds. “And she hates this story because she denies it, but I’m convinced that’s what it was!”

Kenny Chesney’s new book Heart Life Music will be available on Tuesday, November 4.
