Kelly Clarkson is opening up about her dating struggles after her divorce from Brandon Blackstock in 2022.
On a recent episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, Clarkson discussed her post-divorce experiences with comedian Tiffany Haddish and admitted feeling nervous and awkward about the dating scene.
“I get so nervous,” Clarkson confessed. “It’s awkward.”
Despite receiving compliments from Haddish, Clarkson clarified that her dating hesitations are not rooted in self-worth issues. “It’s not that I don’t think I’m a prize, I just find it awkward,” she explained. “And it’s the same things— ‘Where did you grow up?’” she said regarding typical first date conversations.
In 2020, after being married for seven years, Clarkson filed for divorce from her former husband, Brandon Blackstock. Reflecting on her dating life, she admitted that perhaps she hasn’t had enough experience to fully embrace it.
“I don’t think I’ve dated a lot. I think that’s the thing,” Kelly said. “Maybe I just haven’t done it enough.”
This isn’t the first time Clarkson has publicly talked about her dating life.
Reflecting on her past marriage in an interview with PEOPLE earlier this year, Clarkson revealed that marriage was never a personal goal. Even though her ex-husband valued marriage, Clarkson’s personal experiences influenced her opinion about it.
“I never wanted to get married the first time,” she said. “[Brandon] had children, a religious background, and it was important, I think, for him. But I’ve never been that person. Because I’ve been through a couple divorces in my family, I just don’t like to put any weight on it.”
Moving forward, Clarkson made it clear that finding a partner who brings their own fulfillment to the relationship is important.
“I told a friend [that a potential partner] would have to be an individual who brings their own life to the table without needing anything from me,” she shared.
“I’m really good right now, I’m having a good time,” she assured.
