DWTS Star Julianne Hough Plans To Debut A Bold New Style
Julianne Hough recently revealed a “weird” lifelong dream – to shave her head. The 37-year-old is an Emmy Award-winning dancer, singer, and actress, best known for her time on Dancing with the Stars. She took home the coveted mirror ball trophy two times during her years as a professional dance partner, and then later returned as a judge on the show.
On an episode of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, Hough revealed her desire to travel to Bhutan, a small country situated along the Himalayas in South Asia, and have her head shaved by a monk. She told podcast host Amanda Hirsch:
“I have this thing on my list of things I want to do: I want to go to Bhutan and shave my head with a monk. It was just to shave my head, but now there’s two added layers: Bhutan and a monk.”
In Bhutan, a focus on Gross National Happiness (GNH) is a hallmark of its society. Bhutanese monks are known for their devotion to the nation’s Buddhist culture, meditation, and the preservation of traditional practices.
The professional dancer says that this bucket list item is one that she has thought long and hard about and fully intends to accomplish. She has even discussed it with her hairdresser, Riawna Capri, and devised a plan to maintain her signature look when necessary for work.
“I literally called her and I was like, ‘I think we need to make a wig that is my exact haircut right now…’ Because I think this is my look. I was like, ‘We need to replicate this as a wig so that I can just [shave it] and then know that I’m good for work.’”

Both A Symbolic And A Literal Transformation
Julianne Hough has sported her blonde hair in a variety of lengths and styles over the years, from a short pixie cut to long flowing locks. She explains that the varying styles are an “outward expression of whatever I go through internally.”
She adds that over the last seven years, she has been going through an “excavation” where she has removed the “systems of protection of who you think you should be.” She let go of certain relationships, including her former marriage to Brooks Laich, and her Los Angeles home of 11 years.

Hough feels that the last thing to do is to shave her head. “Take it off!“ she says.
