Jay North, the beloved child actor who portrayed Dennis Mitchell in the 1960’s sitcom Dennis the Menace, has died at the age of 73.
Jay North’s longtime friend, Laurie Jacobson, shared the news of his passing in a social media post on Sunday (April 6). Jacobson said in the post that their mutual friend and Dennis the Menace co-star Jeanne Russell called her with the news. She added that North died after battling cancer for several years.
“As many of his fans know, he had a difficult journey in Hollywood and after…but he did not let it define his life. He had a heart as big as a mountain, loved his friends deeply,” Jacobson wrote. “He called us frequently and ended every conversation with ‘I love you with all my heart.’ And we loved him with all of ours. A life-long friend of Jon’s, a brother to Jeanne and a dear friend to me, we will miss him terribly. He is out of pain now. His suffering is over. At last, he is at peace.”
Jay North was remembered by other industry friends, including Jon Provost. Provost starred as Timmy Martin in the television series Lassie. He and North were friends since childhood.
“I share this news with a heavy, heavy heart. We just lost another original and dear friend, Jay ‘Dennis the Menace’ North…….Jay passed today at 12:00 EST, I’ve known Jay for almost 70 years,” Provost wrote. “Now you can rest in peace Jay. It wasn’t as easy for you as it was for some of us, not that it was a piece of cake that’s for sure, but you did suffer a lot more than most. You were a great guy Jay and I miss you with all my heart, but I know you’re at peace now.”
About Dennis the Menace
Dennis the Menace was a sitcom based on the comic strip created by Hank Ketcham. The show’s pilot episode premiered in 1958 when Jay North was only 7 years old. It was picked up as a regular series a year later.
The show aired every Sunday evening until 1963. North was 12 years old when Dennis the Menace was canceled due to the network feeling that North’s character had outgrown his menacing antics.
Jay North’s Life & Career
While North appeared in a number of other television series prior to his role of Dennis, he struggled to find work afterward due to having to “fight the ghost of Dennis the Menace.” Eventually he was able to land some small television guest roles before being cast in the family adventure film, Maya, at the age of 15. The show became a television series, putting North back in the spotlight as a teenager, making a teen idol at the time.
North continued to appear in films and shows in small acting and voice acting roles. He eventually left Hollywood in an effort to live a more private life.
But in 1993, a new Dennis the Menace film was released and renewed interest in North and his career. The actor made some appearances on talk shows and other events to talk about his career, but ultimately withdrew from the public eye “to live a contented, happy life … with the people I love, and kind of just vanish into the mists of time.”
