Jason Aldean’s Controversial Song “Try That In A Small Town” Reaches #1 On Mediabase Country Chart
Jason Aldean‘s “Try That in a Small Town” sits at #1 on Mediabase’s Country chart…months after it topped the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.
To catch you up to speed, Aldean released “Try That in a Small Town” in May 2023. The song mostly flew under the radar until Aldean released its official music video on July 14.
Controversy ensued due to the song’s lyrics and the video’s setting at the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee. Past reported incidents of racial violence occurred at the same courthouse.

Because of the controversy, CMT pulled the music video from its channel. CMT’s decision caused backlash, and fans showed their support for Aldean by streaming the song and watching its music video over and over again.
“Try That In A Small Town” Previously Hit #1 This Summer
Immediately following the controversy, “Try That in a Small Town” reached #1 on Billboard‘s all-genre Hot 100 chart. It was Aldean’s first time ever topping the chart in his career.
The song also reached the #1 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart and the #2 spot on the Country Airplay chart. At the time, it was only the 22nd song in history to have topped both the Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs charts.

Now, three months after “Try That in a Small Town” topped the Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs charts, the song is a #1 hit on another chart.

At the time of this writing (on October 25, 2023), “Try That in a Small Town” is the #1 song on the Mediabase Country chart. Mediabase is a service that tracks radio airplay, and its charts are based on the most-played songs on terrestrial and satellite radio.
Tully Kennedy, who co-wrote “Try That in a Small Town” with Kelly Lovelace, Neil Thrasher, and Kurt Allison, reacted after the song reached #1 on the Mediabase chart. Kennedy said:
“This one means a lot…Thx to everybody who got our backs.. To my brother @jasonaldean thx for standing up and giving this song a life..so proud of you bro…. to all the believers who stood next to us and understood what this was all about thank you…”
Aldean also reacted to the news in a video he shared on social media. He said:
“Hey everybody, I just want to get on here and say ‘thank you’ to you guys and everybody at country radio for making ‘Try That in a Small Town’ the number one song this week. I can’t wait for you guys to hear the rest of the album coming out on November 3.”
The album Aldean is referring to is his upcoming 11th studio album, Highway Desperado. Like he said, the album is being released on November 3!
