Carrie Underwood stepped away from her judge’s seat to perform during Monday night’s American Idol episode.
The first live episode of American Idol Season 24 brought the show’s second Songs of Faith Night in as many years. The 2-hour episode featured the Top 20 singing inspiring songs from their own personal journey. And the judges also took the stage to perform a song of faith.
The episode opened with Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan singing “Jesus Is Love” with the Top 20. But one of the highlights of the night was Carrie Underwood’s powerful performance of “How Great Thou Art.” Underwood was joined by Season 23 platinum Ticket winners, Filo Ebid, Kolbi Jordan, and Canaan James Hill to sing the hymn.
Carrie Underwood’s “How Great Thou Art” Performance
Carrie Underwood, a devout Christian, first performed the song for a national audience in 2011 at the “ACM Girls’ Night Out: Superstar Women of Country” concert. Vince Gill accompanied her on guitar and sang harmony. It quickly became one of Carrie’s signature performances and one that has garnered tens of millions of views across all platforms.

Carrie included the song on her 2014 Greatest Hits: Decade #1 album, and sang it on American Idol in 2025 for the first-ever Songs sf Faith Night on the show.
It was only fitting for Carrie to sing it once again for Songs of Faith Night, a theme night that she is credited with being “the driving force behind.” Like last season, this year’s Songs of Faith Night aired during the week of Easter, a holiday during which Christians around the world celebrate the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Not every performance during Monday night’s episode of American Idol shared a Christian theme; all of the songs were considered inspirational.
