As the Yellowstone universe has expanded with its prequels 1883 and 1923, many fans and media outlets have attempted to construct a Dutton family tree. But all the family trees are pure guesses at how the Dutton family’s lineage will play out over time.
In reality, no one knows the finalized Dutton family tree. Not even the stars of the shows!
Julia Schlaepfer, the actress who plays Alex on 1923, recently spoke to TVInsider. She shared what she knows about the Dutton family tree…or rather, what she doesn’t know.

To add to it, Schlaepfer says show creator Taylor Sheridan claims he also has no clue which way the Dutton family tree is branching off:
“It was funny, because when we all got to Cowboy Camp, the cast, we were all debating it,” she said. “We were like, ‘Who is it? I don’t know.’ And we would pester Taylor all the time being like, ‘Taylor, it’s gotta be this, right? Because this and this and this.’ And he’d be like, ‘I don’t know. Honestly, guys, I don’t know.’ And we were like, ‘Of course, you know! You have a family tree somewhere written out.'”
Although Schlaepfer has no idea where the Dutton family tree is headed, she has a theory 1923 is “building towards that.” You can watch another one of her interviews below.
Many fans have speculated that Spencer and Alex will become the grandparents of Yellowstone‘s John Dutton. Others believe that Jack and Elizabeth will be John Dutton’s grandparents instead. We’ll just have to wait and see how the family tree plays out as 1923 continues.
