Emmy Russell made a name for herself on Season 22 of American Idol, grabbing the hearts of viewers with her vulnerable performances.

During her time on Idol, Emmy Russell showed that music is a way for her to express her emotions. She auditioned with her original song “Skinny,” which shares her past struggles with an eating disorder caused by people criticizing her weight when she was younger.

Emmy proved to be a skilled performer, eventually making it to the top 5, which comes as no surprise given her family’s deep roots in music. Not only is Emmy talented in her own right, but she also comes from a long line of performers and is the granddaughter of country legend Loretta Lynn.

Now that Emmy Russell has continued her music career after Idol, she remains performing songs that have a personal meaning to her. In one of her recent social media videos, Emmy sits behind a piano, playing and singing Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me.”

“The House That Built Me” was originally sung by Miranda Lambert and released in 2010 as the third single from her third studio album, Revolution. The song became Lambert’s first number-one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

The song describes the narrator returning to the house where she grew up. Now an adult, she asks the current resident if she can come in and look around at the place she once called home. She refers to it as the house that built her because of all the memories made there, which ultimately shaped who she is today.

Fittingly enough, Emmy recently visited her grandmother’s old home in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky.

Earlier this month, Emmy shared that she took a trip to visit Loretta Lynn’s old home, saying that she has a newfound appreciation for the history behind it now that she’s older.

“Some history for me…went to memaws house, saw some family, met some people when I played at Alley Fest that supported me on American idol and prior since I was a kid,” Emmy wrote in a post accompanied by photos of her at the historic home.

“[For] the first time as a woman I got to see and feel the history! I think I went when I was 7 playing a show with her to her house, but it is so neat to appreciate it now that I’m older.”
