At just 12, Darci Lynne won over the nation’s hearts with her puppetry skills, making history as the youngest winner in America’s Got Talent history. Now at the age of 19, Darci is ready to shake things up. Leaving her puppets behind, she’s diving into a solo music career, showcasing her impressive singing abilities.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Darci Lynne opened up about her new direction.
“They all have that 12-year-old in mind whenever my name comes up,” Darci reveals, reflecting on how others perceive her. “And so now it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, she’s growing up.’”
She Released Her Debut Single
And although Darci is forever grateful for her time on AGT, being able to tour around the world because of her win, She’s breaking free from the mold, eager to show the world her true self. Her debut single, “Push Our Luck,” and its music video mark a new beginning. Darci wants everyone to come along for the ride and see a side of her they’ve never seen before.
“I started writing music in quarantine, and it’s just something that I’ve come to be super passionate about,” she explains. “Ventriloquism has brought me so far and blessed me with lots of people who have just kept on this journey with me. So, it’s important that I show this side of me and show that I can hold my own as a solo artist now, singing with my mouth open.”
Darci’s new single, “Push Our Luck,” draws inspiration from her past relationship with an old flame, reminiscing about young love and the thrill of pushing curfew boundaries. However, she surprises fans by revealing that she’s moved on and has a new guy in her life.
“I’ve only been kind of dating him since December. I actually met him at a wedding. He was really nervous to talk to me. I think that’s why I liked him so much. He came up to me and just wanted to tell me how much he appreciated what I do. And I don’t think he expected me to give him my number, but there was something about him. He is absolutely wonderful. I really, really like him.”
While Darci embarks on multiple new chapters in her life, her solo career brings plenty of chances to show off her talent like never before, getting fans excited to see what she does next.
