In 2010, the movie Country Strong debuted in theaters. The film starred Gwyneth Paltrow as the troubled country singer Kelly Canter. Real-life country music star Tim McGraw played her husband, James.
Leighton Meester played beauty queen and rising starlet Chiles Stanton. Garrett Hedlund played Beau Hutton, another country singer who’s involved in a secret romance with Kelly. He eventually falls in love with Chiles.
Country Strong is likely the place many country music fans know Hedlund from. In more recent times, he’s gained newfound attention for playing the character Mitch Keller on the Paramount+ series Tulsa King. The show’s creator is Taylor Sheridan, who is famous for creating Yellowstone and its affiliated prequel series.
Now, Hedlund has been cast in another Sheridan series, which is loosely connected to the Yellowstone universe.
Called 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, the show will tell the tale of the real-life Western lawman Bass Reeves. The series branches off of the Yellowstone prequel 1883, which was set during the same era in the American West. Hedlund’s Country Strong co-star, McGraw, played one of the main characters in 1883.
According to Variety, Hedlund has been cast in The Bass Reeves Story as a character named Garrett Montgomery. Reeves hires Montgomery to help him since Montgomery is a skilled horseback rider and knows a lot about the area they’re in.
David Oyelowo will play Reeves in the series and will also serve as an executive producer. Other names attached to the show include Lauren E. Banks, Demi Singleton, Forrest Goodluck and Barry Pepper. Dennis Quaid and Grantham Coleman will play recurring characters.
Variety‘s report states The Bass Reeves Story is currently filming in Texas. We’re anxious to watch Hedlund and the rest of the cast bring the story to life.
