The children’s educational program Sesame Street first aired in November 1969. Created by Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett, the show’s use of live-action puppetry to teach kids valuable lessons in reading, math, and social skills has made characters like Big Bird, Elmo, Cookie Monster, and Oscar the Grouch household names. Over the past five decades, the show has won 11 Grammys and over 200 Emmy Awards.
It’s great to see Sesame Street introducing all genres to its musical lineup, and Chris Stapleton is the perfect way to bring country music to the loved program. While details about his appearance are being kept under wraps until it airs, we do know that, unlike many celebrities and artists on the show, Stapleton has written an original song to perform.

Chris Stapleton Writes Original Song For Sesame Street
Of course, a show as big as Sesame Street usually has a separate team of professional songwriters who create music for each episode. However, the show’s music director, Bill Sherman, said in a statement that Stapleton insisted on writing his own lyrics.
“Chris Stapleton really wanted to write his own song,” Sherman said.
After the pair hopped on a Zoom call for two hours, the song came to life and was ready to be shared with the world.
“It was really one of the most surreal two-hour Zooms that I really ever had in my life,” added Sherman
According to ABC News, the upcoming season will focus on teaching viewers about emotional well-being. Other music stars set to appear in 2025 alongside Stapleton include SZA, Noah Kahan, Reneé Rapp, and Samara Joy.
Sesame Street’s new season will kick off on January 16 on the streaming service MAX. It will also be available on PBS stations nationwide and PBS Kids in the fall.
