After teasing it for a week, Carrie Underwood‘s new single is finally here! The song, titled “Ghost Story,” was released on Friday (March 18).

Prior to the release of “Ghost Story,” Underwood had gone years without releasing a new solo country single. Her last one was 2019’s “Drinking Alone.”

Underwood released a Christmas album (My Gift) in 2020 and a gospel album (My Savior) in 2021. She did release the Christmas song “Hallelujah” off of My Gift in late 2020.

In 2021, Underwood united with Jason Aldean to record “If I Didn’t Love You.” The song became a #1 country hit and recently won the ACM Award for Single of the Year. Underwood and Aldean also performed the song during the ceremony.

It was backstage at the ACM Awards where Underwood first hinted at the fact she was working on new solo country material. She didn’t wait long to release “Ghost Story” after that!

“Ghost Story” is narrated by a brokenhearted woman. She speaks to the man who left her, telling him he will forever be haunted by her and the memories they made together.

As the chorus goes:

I’m gonna be your ghost story. That keeping you up all night memory I’ll be haunting you, you’ll be wanting me. I’m gonna be your ghost story.”

Underwood also dropped a lyric video to accompany “Ghost Story.” Fans who watched the video and listened to the song gave it rave reviews in the comments section on YouTube:

“I. AM. Obsessed!! Leave it to Carrie Underwood to always bring the hits! Gonna be on repeat for a long time!” commented one fan.

Another listener wrote, “The images that she paints….simply chilling. LOVE THIS!!!”

Wow! Beautifully written, and sang. No one brings a song to life better than Carrie,” wrote someone else.

A few fans drew comparisons between “Ghost Story” and some of Underwood’s past singles, such as “Before He Cheats” and “Blown Away.” It definitely has a darker vibe like those two songs.

We wonder if this song’s release means that Underwood has a full album ready to go too? Guess we’ll wait and see!
