Jimmy Carter, The 39th President Of The United States, Has Died At The Age Of 100
Former President Jimmy Carter died on Sunday, December 29, 2024. He was 100 years old.
Carter was born as James Earl Carter Jr. on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. The White House website details how “Peanut farming, talk of politics, and devotion to the Baptist faith were mainstays of his upbringing.”
Carter graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1946 and married his wife, Rosalynn, that same year. They had four children together: John William “Jack,” James Earl III “Chip,” Donnel “Jeff” Jeffrey, and Amy Lynn.
He served as a Naval officer for seven years before returning to Plains. He then entered state politics and eventually became the Governor of Georgia, serving from 1971 to 1975.
Just two years later, Carter became the 39th President of the United States, serving from 1977 to 1981.
Rosalynn Carter Died One Year Before Her Husband
Post-presidency, Carter became known for his work with the nonprofit organization Habitat for Humanity. The organization helps construct and provide housing to those in need.
The Carters also co-founded The Carter Center, whose mission is “to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health” worldwide.
Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. As the White House website states, he was honored “for work to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”
The former president struggled with his health in the later years of his life. The Carter Center announced he entered hospice care in February 2023.
Rosalynn preceded her husband in death on November 19, 2023, at the age of 96. She and President Carter had been married for 77 years.
