New year, new song, new concept.
That’s what Carrie Underwood was going for when she was getting ready for her sixth year as NBC’s Sunday Night Football theme song performer. She began singing the opening song in 2013, continuing the tradition of singing “Waiting All Day For Sunday Night,” which is a reworking of the Joan Jett song “I Hate Myself For Loving You.”
After a few years of performing the Sunday Night staple, the song changed to “Oh, Sunday Night,” a song inspired by Underwood’s duet with Miranda Lambert, “Somethin’ Bad.”
Like previous years, the song’s lyrics change just a bit each week to be about the two teams that are gearing up to play each other that night.
This year, they changed up the song again, but did something they’ve never done before – recorded a completely original tune.
“This season we have a new song, a new approach, and new locations,” director Tripp Dixon said. “Carrie brought us a new song and it inspired us to kind of get out of the sound stage.”
So, instead of filming the entire opening video on a soundstage, they went on location, showing off famous NFL locations like Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Dallas, Philadelphia, Seattle, and New York.
About a month ago, right when NFL preseason started, NBC got us pumped up for Sunday Night Football by posting a snippet of the brand-new song, titled “Game On.”

Written by Underwood, Chris DeStefano, and Brett James, “Game On” was “written specifically for Sunday Night Football,” the “Cry Pretty” singer explained.
