Spoons as a musical instrument? Wichita-native and internationally known street performer Abby Roach – also known as Abby the Spoon Lady – is a percussionist and one of the very few professional spoon players in the United States.
In celebration of “Play Music on the Porch Day” last year, Roach and her friend Chris Rodrigues hit the great outdoors to jam out on her porch. Choosing a more traditional instrument than his professional spoon-playing friend, Rodriques expertly plucked on the strings of his gorgeous steel guitar while Roach made mind-blowing music using only two silver spoons.
In addition to expertly playing their instruments together, Rodrigues sings along to popular folk song, “Angels in Heaven.” The talented duo often perform together and are available for bookings in the Asheville, North Carolina area, where they both currently reside.

The Wichita-native began studying the art of American folk percussion, music, and folklore while roaming the country on foot and rail. In her storyteller events, Roach discusses her past life living as an American hobo and the lifestyle that entails. Fast-forward a decade later and Roach is a world renowned street performer, playing in some of Asheville’s most premiere venues.
