The American Flag The Skydivers Jumped With Was 3,200 Square Feet
Earlier this fall, on October 4, a team of Libyan skydivers with Skydive Benghazi did a free fall jump over Benghazi with a Libyan flag that spanned approximately 1,845 square feet.
This was certified by the Guinness World Records, with the record being for the “largest flag flown while in freefall.”
However, that record wouldn’t stand for long.
On Pearl Harbor Day this year, December 7, America reclaimed this unique world record, flying a flag nearly double the size of that of the Libyan record-holders.

Restoring this record to the United States became a personal mission for the jump’s organizers.
Speaking with Fox News Digital, retired U.S. Army Ranger Jariko Denman reached out to entrepreneur Jared Isaacman — who is awaiting Congressional confirmation to become the NASA administrator — about pursuing the world record for the largest flag flown in free fall after he saw video of Libya’s victory.
Sharing the video of Skydive Benghazi’s jump online, Denman asked, “Who’s down to break this record?”
Responding to the call for action were Skydive Arizona and Skydive Chicago, with Skydive Chicago notably including one of the sport’s most celebrated skydivers, Rook Nelson.
Meeting on December 7 in Eloy, Arizona, this elite group of skydivers came together to make this record a reality.
Flying aboard a Vietnam-era Huey, once the team reached 10,000 feet, they deployed a 3,200-square-foot American flag, with the group taking different sides of the flag to keep it straight in the free fall.
Of the jump, Denman told Fox News Digital that the flag weighed 170 pounds, and that its size contributed to a variety of “extraneous dangers to mitigate,” many of which had never needed to be addressed by this time of skydivers before.
Also among those participating in the dive were Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-MT, who posted about the jump on X, formerly Twitter, writing, “Proud to be part of the incredible team of Americans and veterans that included a SEAL, EOD, Ranger, fighter pilot, astronaut, and some of the best skydivers in the world who returned the world record for the largest flag ever parachuted out of an aircraft back to the USA.”
He added, “There’s no question about it: this record belongs on American soil, and setting it alongside this great team of patriots is a fitting way to kick off the celebration for America 250 next year.”
