CMT honored the legendary band Alabama with a star-studded tribute show, which aired on August 15.
CMT Giants: Alabama brought many country stars together to honor who Blake Shelton called “the undisputed greatest country music band of all time.”
The previously filmed tribute included performances from Jason Aldean, Brad Paisley, Jamey Johnson, Lorrie Morgan and Pam Tillis, Old Dominion, Little Big Town, Riley Green, and Sam Hunt.
Additionally, Martina McBride, Lionel Richie, Vince Gill, Luke Bryan, and Evander Holyfield appeared virtually, speaking about Alabama’s impact on their lives and the world.
Alabama also took the stage to perform their iconic hits “My Home’s In Alabama” and “Mountain Music.” Additionally, clips from a sit-down interview from band members Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry played throughout the special.
Alabama was formed by Randy Owen and his cousin Teddy Gentry in 1969.
They were later joined by another one of their cousins, Jeff Cook. They found great success in the 1980s, reaching the number one spot on the chart 27 times and released seven multi-platinum albums. The band had an impressive streak of 21 country number-one singles!
In their decades-long career, they have sold over 75 million albums, have a total of 41 number one records on the Billboard chart, and are the most successful country band in history.
They are members of the Musicians Hall of Fame as well as the Country Music Hall Of Fame.
Blake Shelton, singer-songwriter Steve Wariner, and singer Kara Britz performed “Old Flame” at CMT Giants: Alabama.
Before he released eighteen studio albums and over fifty singles, Steve Wariner backed up the legendary Dottie West, Bob Luman, and Chet Atkins.
Alabama released “Old Flame” in 1991 and was written by Donny Lowery and Mac McAnally. It became the band’s third number one single on the Billboard chart.
As the song began, Randy Owen was already giving them his stamp of approval: a standing ovation.
