Dawson’s Creek Actor James Van Der Beek Dies At 48

On February 11, Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek passed away following a battle with cancer. The actor was 48 years old.

James’ wife Kimberly shared the devastating news in a joint Instagram post.

“He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”

In August of 2023, James was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer and later went public with the diagnosis in November 2024. He is survived by Kimberly and their six beautiful children.

James is best-known for portraying Dawson Leery on Dawson’s Creek, a role he landed after dropping out of college. He starred with Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and Michelle Williams during the series’ six seasons from 1998 to 2003.

He also played Mox in Varsity Blues, Sean Bateman in The Rules of Attraction, and more. The actor won various awards throughout his career, including MTV Movie Awards, Teen Choice Awards, and Young Hollywood Awards.

James married Kimberly in 2010 and together the couple shared daughters Olivia, Annabel, Emilia, and Gwendolyn, and sons, Joshua and Jeremiah. James previously referred to fatherhood as “the most treasured honor” of his life.

Landman Actress Ali Larter Remembers James Van Der Beek

Following his death, tributes for James came pouring in. When talking on the red carpet during the 32nd Annual Actor Awards, his Varsity Blues co-star Ali Larter had some touching words to share about the late actor.

Ali sent her will-wishes to Kimberly and the family, saying that the fondest memory she will have of James will always be the “grace” he had within him.

“My heart is with his family,” Ali continued.

In the 1999 film, James starred as Jonathan “Mox” Moxon, a high school quarterback who takes over the starting role on his Texas football team. Ali played Darcy Sears, a popular cheerleader whose storyline included one of the film’s most memorable scenes. The movie became a breakout hit for both James and Ali’s careers.
