On Dec. 28, 2025, tragedy struck the family of NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin.

That day, a house fire broke out at his parents’ residence in North Carolina, leading to the hospitalization of both Denny’s parents. From that incident, his mother, Mary Lou, survived; but Denny’s father, Dennis Hamlin, 75, died.

This fire happened to occur on Mary Lou and Dennis’ 52nd anniversary.

Now, on March 15, nearly three full months since this tragedy, Denny Hamlin won his first race since his father’s death, the NASCAR Cup Series Pennzoil 400 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

With this win, Denny has now won 61 races, which The New York Times noted has broken a longstanding tie Denny has shared with driver Kevin Harvick on the NASCAR’s all-time win list, placing Denny at No. 10 on his own.

Further, Denny has now won a race across 20 seasons of NASCAR, putting him as only the fifth member in a unique club, including only Bobby Allison, Dale Earnhardt Sr., Jeff Gordon, and Richard Petty.

Responding to this, Denny stated:

“My name stands out amongst — those are the legends of the sport. I feel very fortunate to be on the list. Those guys were far more talented than I have ever thought about being. I just work really hard. I still, to this day, work really hard at my craft to try to continue to get better. Days like today certainly make me feel happy about where I’m at in the sport still and what I can still do.”

At a post race press conference, Denny simply stated that this victory “is not like others.”

Watch Denny Hamlin’s Mother And Daughters Embrace Him After His Vegas Win

This victory occurred on Sunday, March 15, and saw Denny joined by his daughters and his mother on the track, embracing and taking in a positive moment for their family.

Asked what it took to get back behind the wheel and pull off this victory, Denny replied, “I know it took a few weeks to feel like driving, and, you know, over the last couple weeks, I’ve definitely regained my love of it.

He added that he’s now “refocused,” noting that races like “these are great opportunities for us.”

Then, his mother, Mary Lou, approached him, giving him a hug and saying, “That’s my boy.”

To this, the audience could be heard applauding.

Returning to the microphone, Denny said, “I mean, this is a family sport. My family obviously had so much sacrifice to help me get here. Now that I’ve grown — generations of Hamlins following me — it’s great Mom gets to see this. I know Dad’s still saying, ‘That’s my boy.’”

He then added, “Hell of a day.”
